Sedation Dentistry

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Patients who are anxious about sitting in the dentist’s chair, should be aware of sedation dentistry.

Most forms of sedation used in dentistry allow patients to remain conscious but relaxed, helping to ease the tension of undergoing dental procedures.

Methods of Sedation

There are several methods of sedation available:

  • Nitrous oxide is a common sedation technique. A small mask is fitted over the nose, and the patient inhales the gas while the procedure is taking place. Nitrous oxide causes a relaxed feeling during dental procedures. The effect wears off just seconds after the mask is removed, allowing patients to immediately resume normal activities.
  • Intravenous (IV) sedation consists of a sedative administered directly into the bloodstream. IV sedation is good for shorter procedures. Administering the medication directly into the bloodstream means immediate results. Patients may feel as if they were asleep during the procedure, and they will need a designated driver afterward as grogginess is normal following IV sedation.
  • Oral sedation can be used for mild to moderate dental anxiety. Patients will be given a medication to be taken approximately an hour before their appointment. Oral sedation will leave patients feeling very relaxed, and many may not even remember all of the procedure. Patients opting for oral sedation need to be accompanied to their appointment by a friend or family member as oral sedation can take several hours to wear off.

Patients are monitored during sedation to ensure safety during the procedure.

Benefits of Sedation

Sedation dentistry provides several benefits:

  • It allows dental work to be completed in fewer visits.
  • It helps alleviate anxiety, leaving patients relaxed after their procedure.
  • It helps keep patients from remembering the sounds and smells often associated with dental anxiety.

Patients interested in sedation dentistry or who have questions or concerns, are invited to contact our office for more information. We will be happy to help you decide if sedation dentistry is right for you!
