Dental Bonding

Patients who have a small cosmetic issue with their teeth but thought cosmetic dentistry was out of their reach might consider dental bonding. Minor esthetic flaws can sometimes be corrected with this noninvasive procedure.

Dental bonding can be beneficial for patients who want to avoid dramatic procedures but have some small concerns about the appearance of their teeth.

Which Esthetic Conditions Can Be Corrected With Dental Bonding?

  • Gaps between teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Oddly shaped teeth
  • Short or eroded teeth
  • Dark metal fillings
  • Abfractions (exposed roots from recession)
  • Dark spots on teeth and other discolourations

How Does Cosmetic Dental Bonding Work?

The cosmetic dental bonding procedure is usually simple. First, your dentist will etch (roughen) the surface of the tooth. A conditioning agent will be applied to prepare the tooth to bond to the composite material. Next, composite material will be applied in several layers and hardened with a special curing light.

Once the final layer is applied, the composite will be polished and smoothed so it blends well with the existing tooth enamel. The custom composite shade will be matched to the patient’s natural teeth so the bonding will blend well and be practically undetectable.

Patients with yellow or stained teeth might want to consider teeth whitening prior to dental bonding since the composite material cannot be whitened.

Benefits of Cosmetic Dental Bonding

One of the main benefits of cosmetic bonding is that minimal prep work on the tooth is required. That means that more of the tooth will be left intact, and your dentist will add the composite material as needed. Because bonding is noninvasive, most patients find the procedure quite comfortable.

Cosmetic bonding is a versatile method to improve the esthetics of the teeth. We can help you determine whether dental bonding will be right for your unique needs.
